Final Fantasy began back in the days of the 8-bit Nintendo. It set the standard for modern day console role-playing games. With Final Fantasy VII, at the time, it was the most ambitious project ever. The developers set out to expand on many of the ideas set by earlier Final Fantasy games (graphics, story and the way it was told, and character development).

Final Fantasy VII also brought the genre to the mainstream gameplaying market. Before its release, many companies were hesitant on bringing some Japanese role-playing games over because they feared there wasn't a big enough market for them. That all changed after Square's masterpiece was released.
