Activision's third band-centric Guitar Hero release follows rock group Van Halen during its formative years with David Lee Roth as lead singer, but without original bassist Michael Anthony. As with previous titles focusing on Aerosmith and Metallica, Guitar Hero: Van Halen features 3D modeled versions of each band member as well as signature-style moves, clothing, and instruments from the past and present. Complete a solo tour on bass, guitar, drums, or vocals, or team up with up to three friends for the full band experience. In addition to Van Halen's biggest hits, 19 songs from such artists as Queen, Weezer, blink-182, the Offspring, and Queens of the Stone Age are included. Among the 25 featured songs from Van Halen are "Jump," "Hot for Teacher," "Panama," "Little Guitars," "Cathedral," "Spanish Fly," and "Eruption."

Designed to present grown-up gamers with a well-rounded cowboy adventure, Gun tells a classic Western story of revenge and rugged individualism, with the player in the starring role. Colton White was robbed of his heritage by a lifetime of lies; now he aims to take charge of his destiny and become his own man. The game's open-ended mission structure and expansive environments allow players to explore the frontier as they choose. Missions offer a variety of gameplay styles, including stealth action, precision shooting, and horseback riding.

Players can develop Colton White to be an upstanding, classic hero, who protects the innocent and follows a code of righteousness, or a vengeful loner, who best serves the frontier community by serving himself first. The game's story progresses through a series of major missions, but many side-quests allow the hero to develop skills and earn scratch. Money and other crucial resources can be gained by collecting bounties, winning at the poker table, or by less civically upstanding means.

The Guitar Hero series offers its biggest lineup of songs to date with Legends of Rock, the first game developed outside of Harmonix. Fans of the finger-fiddling franchise will rock out to over 70 tracks, many of which use master recordings from the original artists. The core play mechanics are nearly identical to previous iterations, with players using a guitar-shaped controller to quickly match colored notes as they cascade down the screen. By keeping up with the song, hitting the right chords at the right time, and strumming to the beat, players will rack up points and advance to more challenging tunes.

Player-sabotaging power-ups include doubling the number of onscreen notes, switching control to left-handed play, and more. Non-competitive types will appreciate the career co-op mode, allowing two guitarists to work together through each song list. Among the featured tracks are "Paint It Black," "Cherub Rock," "Slow Ride," "Barracuda," "Rock and Roll All Nite," and "Sabotage." Guitar Hero III for PlayStation 2 is available as a standalone purchase or as part of a bundle including a black, wireless guitar controller patterned after the Gibson Kramer.
